GORDON & HODGKINSON DUO
PLAY
LEO ORNSTEIN ON NEW WORLD
RECORDS
At 14, he fled with his family from Russian
persecution to New York City.
At 17 he was the star pianist at the school later
known as Juilliard.
At 18 his debut recital wowed the concert world.
At 21 he became a cult figure in a concert that
nearly caused a riot.
At 25 he was the subject of a full-length
biography.
And at 29 he
gave up stardom, went on to teach at a Philadelphia school whose alumni
included John Coltrane, with his wife raised a son who helped launch the
Internet, retired, bought a trailer, traveled across the country, and settled
at a trailer park in Brownsville, Texas where he kept composing.
And lived to
be 108.
And along the way he wrote some of the most
compelling, dramatic, and romantic music for cello and piano of the twentieth
century.
"the value of [Ornstein's]
powerful works for cello and piano is revealed by the pianist Randall
Hodgkinson and the cellist Joshua Gordon, admirable chamber musicians who play
with passion and sensitivity... These exemplary performances should ensure that
Ornstein's cello works will enjoy some of the limelight the composer shunned for
so long."
-Vivien Schweitzer, New York
